ECE Retention -- Is it All About the Money?
The issue of retention in Early Childhood Education is a growing concern in the field. What has been more concerning over the past 25 years is the ECE wage, or lack there of. While both retention and wage are linked together, it’s important to question if wage is the only variable persuading ECE’s to leave. Is it all about the money? A University of Winnipeg ECE student's recent survey research paper argues that money is not the primary driving force behind the decision to leave the field.

Practice: Enter A Virtual Child Care Centre to Learn about Licensing and the Day Nurseries Act
New Day Nurseries Act for Child Care Supervisors of Ontario Website!
The Government of Ontario has developed a new, bilingual website that gives child care providers a fresh approach to understanding the Day Nurseries Act -- the legislation governing licensed child care programs in Ontario.

Although primarily designed for supervisors of child care programs in Ontario, the site may be accessed by operators, early childhood educators, program staff, parents and anyone who is interested in learning more about licensed child care. The website provides an interactive map of a child care facility. By clicking on a room on the map (e.g., kitchen, infant room, infant/toddler outdoor playground), the relevant Day Nurseries Act requirements are listed. What do you want to investigate in the Toddler Room? Play Equipment and Furnishings? Click on that option.
You can also learn about play equipment and furnishings by clicking on the camera icon to see a series of 15 photographs or click on the video camera to see and hear footage of toddlers in their room. You will also find text which provides you with plain-language licensing requirements for this area as well as the rationale for legislated requirements, and samples of good practices. A self-testing component has been added which allows users to create a unique user profile and learn reflectively through self-testing.
