Family and Child Care Connections is operated by the CUPW Family Resource Center and is the location of the Family Child Care Agency for St. John's and surrounding areas. Our mandate is to provide support to child care providers in the region who wish to be approved with our agency in their endeavors to provide quality child care.

We are closely connected to and partner with the Family Resource Center, by providing drop-in playgroups to child care providers and to the larger community. We strive to engage all stakeholders involved in early learning and care, and we offer workshops, training sessions, parent nights, etc. We have been offering Level 1 of the Family Child Care Training Program from our onset, and were able to offer Level 2 last fall. We will be offering both levels again this fall. We would love to connect with other facilities offering the training to share ideas and strategies.

Our upcoming 2nd Annual Family Child Care Conference will take place this fall (date to be determined), with plenty of workshops and training sessions for family child care providers and professionals from across the province. The conference is a fabulous opportunity to connect with everyone interested in the early learning and child care field. We look forward to a busy and colourful fall.

Our two-evening “Train-the-Trainer” workshop for caregivers was held on September 8 and 15. Caregivers who had participated and completed Levels 1 and 2 of the Family Child Care Training Program were eligible to register for this highly successful workshop.

Level 3 of the Family Child Care Training Program was offered on September 22 to several enthusiastic participants! I will keep you posted on our upcoming sessions!

In the Summer 2004 issue of the e-bulletin, a message from Freda Robinson indicated how Red River College is currently using the second level of the Family Child Care Training Program as a main curriculum along with the addition of a supplement that meets Manitoba’s current regulations. The Early Childhood Education diploma program has accepted this course as a credit for Providing Nurturing Care, a first year course in the diploma program.

The 40-hour Family Child Care Training Course for licensed family child care providers will be offered at Red River College this fall by distance education beginning September 29, and by continuing education beginning September 18.

Since the fall 2003, 20 students have successfully completed the training through distance education and six through continuing education.

We recently completed a pilot project of Level 3 of the Family Child Care Training Program with 13 dedicated family child care providers. These participants were presented with certificates at the Family Day Home Association dinner and were praised for their hard work!

We are planning on delivering additional training sessions in the fall for Level 1 and Level 2. We will keep you posted as more details become available.
